About
Alexander Wilton is a British conductor and organist. Having trained at the Royal College of Music in London and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, his musical formation is shaped by large-scale repertoire demanding long-span architectural thinking and an orchestral approach to sound, with his organ work including a wide range of repertoire and orchestral transcriptions. As an organist, he specialises in the music of Bach, alongside masters of the French Romantic tradition such as Franck, Vierne and Widor, as well as transcriptions of orchestral works by Edwin Lemare, whose virtuosic and colouristic writing has deepend his understanding of orchestral sonority from the organ. Early orchestral experience as a violinist instilled a strong sense of ensemble awareness, and his keyboard background provided a solid understanding of harmony, forming the foundation for both his organ interpretations and his approach to conducting. He also gained experience of working with singers during his time as Sydney Nicholson Organ Scholar at Manchester Cathedral, where he developed his understanding of vocal texture and ensemble coordination.
